Shot put is a track and field event in which athletes "put" (push) a heavy spherical object called a "shot" as far as possible. It is one of the field events in athletics and requires a combination of strength, technique, and explosive power.

Basic Rules:
  • Shot: The shot typically weighs 7.26 kg (16 pounds) for men and 4 kg (8.8 pounds) for women.
  • Technique: The athlete must hold the shot at the neck and push it forward using one arm, employing a specific technique to maximize distance. The two most common techniques are the Glide and the Spin (or rotational) method.
  • Throwing Circle: The athlete must stand inside a 7-foot (2.135 meters) diameter throwing circle and must not step outside it when releasing the shot.
  • Distance: The thrower's goal is to send the shot as far as possible. The distance is measured from the closest point of the landing mark to the inside edge of the circle.
Key Aspects of the Event:
  • Strength and Power: Shot put requires significant upper body strength, especially in the arms, shoulders, and chest, as well as explosive leg power.
  • Technique: Proper footwork, body positioning, and timing are critical to a successful throw. The best shot putters combine explosive power with a refined technique to achieve maximum distance.
  • Training: Athletes typically focus on weightlifting, plyometric, and specialized throwing drills to improve their performance
